Mercy Associates Attend Centenary Celebrations in Newcastle

On Tuesday, May 31st. 2005, the Sisters of Mercy celebrated the 150th anniversary of their arrival in the city. It was a stupendous occasion, the centre piece of which was the concelebrated Mass at which there were three Bishops and some forty priests. During the Mass, a new Cathedral stain glass window, donated by the Sisters to mark the event, was blessed by Bishop Kevin Dunn. The window was designed and constructed by Joseph Nuttgens, a internationally known stain glass artist..

Sister Patricia Bell, the Leader of the Institute of Mercy, welcomed the 400 invited guests and spoke enthusiastically about the Sisters' work in Newcastle, past, present and future.

At the back of the Cathedral, there was an extensive exhibition of the history of the Sisters in the city together with the development of the Associates of Mercy in more recent times.

On Wednesday, June 1st. another Mass was celebrated with another 400 guests, largely made up of past pupils and staff of the schools the Sisters had founded and maintained through their long history.

Throughout the preparations and the celebrations the Associates were delighted to be able to help and support the Sisters on this wonderful occasion.
